Timeline of Events in Tonbridge
1100s Norman Church built in Tonbridge on the site of a Saxon Church.
1124 Tonbridge Priory founded.
1525 Tonbridge Priory closed.
1751 Congregational Church founded in Tonbridge.
1829 First Methodist Church built in East Street.
1844 St. John's Church, Hildenborough built.
1845 Strict Baptist Church formed.
1852 St. Stephen's Church built.
1853 New parish of St. Stephen's created.
1857 Consecration of Tonbridge Cemetery in Shipbourne Road.
Ebenezer Chapel built.
1866 Baptist members of the Congregational Church leave to form a new congregation.
1867 Zion Baptist Chapel built.
1868 Baptist Church formed.
1870s Fish Hall Mission (now named "St. Andrew's") established in Hadlow Road.
1872 Baptist Church built in the High Street.
New Methodist Church built in East Street.
1874 Christ Church Free Church of England founded.
1875 St. Saviour's Church built.
Construction of new Congregational Church building in High Street starts.
1877 Major restoration and building at St. Peter & St. Paul's starts for two years.
1880s Salvation Army begins to hold meetings at the Corn Exchange.
1890 St. Eanswythe's Chapel founded.
1894 Roman Catholic Church built in Waterloo Road.
1895 Police Court Mission opens in Lansdowne Road.
1898 Salvation Army Citadel built in Lyons Crescent.
1901 Christ Church Free Church of England closes.
1904 Corpus Christi Church built in Lyons Crescent to replace the temporary building in Waterloo Road.
1912 Mission Church built in Douglas Road.
1920 Mission Church in Douglas Road becomes known as an Independent Church.
1929 Pentecostal Church opens in Avebury Avenue.
1934 Gospel Hall built in Avebury Avenue.
1954 The Independent Church in Douglas Road is renamed "Evangelical Free Church".
1956 Cage Green Church (now named "St. Philip's") opened.
1965 Methodist Church built in Higham Lane.
1968 Severe flooding affects Tonbridge, including the Baptist Church in the High Street.
1970 Cage Green Church rebuilt.
Baptist Church in the High Street closes but services continue in other buildings.
1972 Congregational Church becomes 'Christ Church United Reformed Church'.
1973 Tonbridge Baptist Church's new building in Darenth Avenue completed.
1978 Christ Church United Reformed Church rebuilt on the same site in the High Street.
1984 Last service held in the Salvation Army Citadel.
1990 Last service held in the Methodist Church in East Street.
1992 St. Stephen's church plant 'The Beacon' opens at St. Stephen's Primary School.
St. John's, Hildenborough opens a church plant at Stocks Green School.
1993 Methodist Church in Higham Lane considerably enlarged.
Christians Caring founded.
1994 Children's Workshop and Ember Trust founded.
1995 First Roman Catholic priest ordained in Tonbridge since the Reformation (Rev. Darren Smith).
Christians Caring becomes a registered charity.
1996 St. Andrew's Church begins holding monthly family services at Woodlands School.
1998 Church on the Way founded.
TOUCH 2000 committee established in preparation for the churches' millennium celebrations.
2002 Major extension and refurbishment of Tonbridge Baptist Church completed.
2003 Completion of 'The River Centre' – Church on the Way's new home.
Tonbridge and Hildenborough church leaders sign a Covenant of Unity.
Start of 'Fused' – monthly united youth services held at Christ Church.
2004 St. Philip's launches their One in a Million fund-raising appeal for The Caleb Project.
St Eanswythe's demolished for reconstruction – congregation continues to meet at St John's Ambulance Brigade Hall
