As we celebrate the year 2000, we must ask:

"What is the Millennium?  What happened 2,000 years ago to cause the celebration?"

The answer is that our time itself is measured from one significant event.  That event was the birth of Jesus, born to Mary in a stable at Bethlehem.  This was the year "one" in the western calendar.

But we must now ask:

Who is Jesus?

Jesus claimed to be the Son of God - God Himself in a human being.  These are some of the claims He made about Himself:

"I am the light of the world."
"I am the way, the truth and the life."
"I am the resurrection and the life."

(These are quotations from John's Gospel in the Bible.)

Plaque on the Millennium Beacon at St. John's Church, Hildenborough The famous author, C. S. Lewis, said that someone who made claims like these is either who he said he is, or else he is a madman or a liar.  It is difficult to see him as a madman or a liar when we look at his life and what he said and did.

Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God.  They believe that when He was crucified on the cross He took all the sins of the world on Himself so that everyone that trusts in Him can be forgiven and have eternal life.  This is the quality of life which begins now and is not even ruined by death.  When Jesus rose from the dead, He showed that this is true.

The Millennium celebrates Jesus.  He brings hope to all nations and peoples.  Christians across the world celebrate His birth, 2,000 years ago.
