PLEASE VISIT http://history.touch2000.org.uk Christians Caring was founded in 1993 at the YMCA. Social Services soon became involved, contributing 70% of funding, which enabled salaries to be paid to club Co-ordinators. Christians Caring became a registered charity in 1995, and has flourished since its founding with up to 15 members for each club.
The members enjoy their day out at the clubs while at the same time their Carers have a break. They come from all walks of life and bring with them many different interests and skills. Some are very skilled with a computer and are able to help with the printing of programmes, etc. Others have important roles in the community, for example one is a Scout leader and another a member of the Tonbridge Bowling Club. Other members' interests include photography, gardening and cross stitch. The helpers are all volunteers who attend regularly for however much time they are able to manage, from about two hours to the whole day. They come from a number of different churches and are enriched by the diversity of church tradition and common Christian outlook. Like the members they all bring a range of interests from football to local history. Most had no previous experience with the disabled but simply a desire to engage in some voluntary work. Some have been helping Christians Caring from its beginning; others have joined recently. The organisation always welcomes new members and helpers. For further information about Christians Caring, please email Deborah Cole, one of the organisation's trustees. | |
